On Monday, August 21, 2017, a rare total solar eclipse will cross the United States. Beginning at 10:15 am, the moon’s shadow – the umbra – will pass over our vineyards in the Eola Hills of Oregon and we’ll experience total darkness – the phase of an eclipse known as totality. It will not happen here again in our lifetime!

You’re invited to share this rare natural phenomenon with us at our 160-acre Legacy Estate Vineyard just outside of Salem, Oregon. Located on a hillside, Legacy offers spectacular views of the Willamette Valley, the Coast Range, and the sky. The area surrounding our vineyard has virtually no light pollution – the local astronomy club hosts night sky viewings there regularly. Our area is reputed to be the best viewing area in the entire U.S. because of its' predictability of clear skies.

This part of Oregon has a rich geologic history. At Legacy, you’ll see the incredibly varied terrain and soils that have resulted from ancient sea beds encountering more recent lava flows and sediment from ice-age floods. The vineyard’s unique geology and elevation contribute to an ideal terroir for growing Pinot Noir, and make it a beautiful place to enjoy everything from wine tasting to eclipse viewing.

On eclipse day, from 6:30 am on, we’ll start with hot beverages and a special breakfast that you can take to the spot where you’ll watch the eclipse take place, other than the areas reserved. The partial eclipse begins around 9 am so you’ll want to be “in your spot” at that time. After watching the eclipse take place, you’ll enjoy a good old-fashioned BBQ, music and dancing on the lawn. And, wine, of course – from our vineyards in the shadow of the eclipse.
